A busy and fun week leading into an even busier and more fun weekend in Cape Town!
Monday, June 18
For our morning meetings we all sit in our professors room to go over where we are at with stories and reaching out to sources, which is always accompanied with a new treat (usually biscuits & sweets), but this time we learned how to eat a passion fruit the ‘right’ way. Basically it’s done by biting into the skin and then squeezing the fruit out. Very very good and delicious this passion fruit.
For the afternoon we went to a cafe with Richard from our photo/video session we had which seems like it was forever ago. We had a good lunch and better wifi at this spot!
Tuesday, June 19
This morning Hassen and his wife Marta joined us for our morning meeting, and afterward we did some laundry and went back to the scone place, Cuppa Cafe. Unfortunately they had no more scones so I settled for a lovely bran muffin which did the trick with all of the toppings.
We had a take out dinner before heading to the Nelson Mandela theater to see Sarafina which is about the Soweto Uprisings, and was really good. We came home a bit late and packed up because we left for a safari in the morning!
Wednesday, June 20
We went to Pilanesberg National Park which is Northwest of Joburg and a LOT warmer. We stayed outside near the reserve in tents that were actually very nice, and the animals thought so too. The ranger said that at night the impalas and zebras will sleep close to our tents to keep warm.
We had time to check out the camp before heading out on the safari. I learned a very valuable lesson to close the door behind you when using a bathroom in a national park, because as I was washing my hands a baboon decided to check out the inside as well. I stayed calm, cool, & collected which I am very proud about.
The safari was a really cool experience and definitley a check off the bucket list. The highlights were definitley the rhinos fighting just to the right of us and the very end of the trip where giraffes walked right across the road in front of our vehicle.
For dinner we gathered in a tent and enjoyed some pap and chakalaka and then had a campfire with some marshmallows.
Thursday, June 21
Thursday morning I had another brief run in the with a baboon, but made sure to close the door this time! We had breakfast at the park before heading to Maropeng for the Cradle of Humankind. We had a tour of the caves where we got to wear cool hats and crawl around under the surface and learn about the geology.
Afterward we drove back to the b&b to pack because we had an early flight in the morning to leave for Cape Town!
