This final home stretch was spent getting stories in order and making sure everything gets done before our flight on Sunday!
The week had a lot of lasts, like my last trip to Dirty Laundry in the Spar complex, my last morning run, last grocery fix for chocolate and dried apricots, and the saddest of them all–my last breakfast at the B&B.
Even though this was the final week, it was packed full of things to do/get done. Highlights included:
On Wednesday our professor’s friends daughter and cousin took us for a tour of the University of Johannesburg campus. She is studying psychology and gave us a little glimpse of what its like to go to school in South Africa (pretty similar to the states). She said she hopes to move to the U.S. after she graduates.
On Thursday we went to Constitution Hill to have a tour of the grounds and the prison cells there (where Nelson Mandela was at one point). Afterwards we had a meeting with Judge Edwin Cameron who is on the equivalent of our supreme court. He was really interesting to hear speak and learn more about-would recommend reading more. After this we headed to a karate studio because of a students interest in this area and the rest of ours as well. I personally had no idea what was going on, but it was fun to watch!
We ended the week how we started it in Joburg, without power. All was well though since we knew how to handle both the lack of wifi and heat!
My last full day on Saturday was spent visiting a clinic in Lenasia to speak with patients and doctors there and see a cataract surgery. Very cool experience, and something I am glad I had the opportunity to fit in, especially since they only hold two cataract camps every year! This story will be posted soon on Hawk News.
That evening we had a farewell cookout at our professor’s sister in laws home which had a ton of yummy food which we ate utensil free in typical South African fashion! We spent our last night in Melville doing karaoke which was a perfect way to end our time.
Sunday we all headed to the Rosebank flee market once more, afterwards saying our goodbyes at the b&b and bracing ourselves for the long flight home. This time in London we took a little nap in Regants park before walking around getting some food and getting on our final flight back to Philly!
